Hoover, Parker and Davis Dams

ISS designs, installs and commissions fully integrated physical and Electronic Security System for Nation’s most famous dams.

The sites:
Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River. This dam, located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas at the Nevada-Arizona border, was named after former President of the United States, Herbert Hoover. When constructed, Hoover Dam was both the world’s largest hydroelectric power generating station and the world’s largest concrete structure. It is now the world’s 38th-largest hydroelectric generating station.

Like Hoover Dam, Parker Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam that crosses the Colorado River 155 miles downstream of Hoover Dam. The dam’s primary functions are to create a reservoir, called Lake Havasu, and to generate hydroelectric power. The dam straddles the border between California and Arizona.

Davis Dam is also on the Colorado River about 45 miles downstream from Hoover Dam. It stretches across the border between Arizona and Nevada, and is a zoned earth fill dam with a concrete spillway. Davis dam was named after Arthur Powell Davis, who was the director of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation from 1914 to 1932.

Dams in general, and Hoover Dam in particular, present some unique security challenges due to their historic value, climate and combined functions of power generation and tourism, which puts these critical infrastructures at a higher threat risk. Hoover Dam also functions as the head-end for monitoring the security systems at Parker and Davis Dams.

 

 


The Solutions:
This BOR project encompasses a complete integrated Electronic Security System (ESS) for all three dams, to include Intrusion Detection System (IDS), Physical Security System (PSS), Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), Access Control System (ACS), Data Transmission Media (DTM), and intercoms. ISS conducted site surveys and designed the ESS for all three dams, as well as installed components of the ESS, and conducted the initial surveys and Performance Verification Test (PVT) for the system.

Hoover Dam

ISS addressed the preservation of the historic elements at Hoover Dam by fabricating custom installations for door contacts and hardware on brass elevator and entry doors. The sensors had to be seamless and unobtrusive. ISS worked with the Historical Society to on every detail of preservation relating to the install.

A custom arms door was designed and fabricated for the Hoover Arms Room, for the greatest functionality.
A Delta Barrier was installed at Hoover Dam.

Cameras needed to be placed and calibrated in ways that would allow for clear views and exposure in the intense desert sun, the highly reflective environment, as well as adjusting for low light periods. CCTV and ACS components installed in parking and tourism areas.

Parker Dam
